What To Plant In June By USDA Plant Hardiness Zone

The USDA Plant Hardiness Zones are created by dividing the United States into various zones based on their coldest temperatures. These zones are helpful in giving us an idea of what is likely to grow well in a given location at each time of year.

Of course, your micro climate makes a big difference too. The individual characteristics of your property, and even spaces within your garden can create warmer and cooler areas where specific plants may thrive.

All of the plants suggested below can be grown without season extenders. If you are using a greenhouse, cloches, or covers, you may even be able to grow more than what’s listed for your zone.

Zones 9 and 10

Zone 9 is my zone, and usually by June I’m about ready to give up on the garden because it’s so hot I can’t keep up with the watering. But if you’re really dedicated and don’t mind tending the garden in the heat, it’s time to plant cowpeas, cucumber, okra, and sweet potatoes for Zones 9-10.

Zone 11

Sweet potato is just about all that can handle the weather right now. Make sure to give them plenty of water!

Zone 12 and 13

It’s pretty hot right now for Zone 12, and it’s not a great time for planting, but if you’re very dedicated in Zone 13, you’ll be able to baby some cantaloupe and watermelon.

Good luck with your June garden planting! There’s something to plant almost everywhere this month, so don’t worry if you got a late start on your garden this year.
